Why North Alabama owners move to vinyl
A wood privacy fence in this climate needs a staining cycle to hold its color, and most owners let that slip a summer or two before the gray shows and the grain starts to open. Vinyl and composite panels skip that cycle entirely. The color is molded through the material rather than sitting on top of it as a finish, so North Alabama sun and the humidity that follows every summer storm do not fade or peel it the way they will a stained board.

That is the real trade an owner is making with vinyl: less upkeep, at the cost of paying more up front and losing the option to change the color later the way a wood fence can be restained a different shade.

How the panels actually go together
Vinyl privacy fence is built from routed rails that the panel sections slide into between posts, rather than boards nailed on one at a time the way wood is. That routed joint is also where a cheap panel fails first, so we set posts to a spacing the panel and rail are actually rated for rather than stretching a run past what the material can carry.
Every post goes in concrete regardless of the fence material, vinyl included. That is standard on every job we do, not an upsell, and it matters more on vinyl than people expect since a loose post lets the whole panel between it and the next post rack and pop out of its routed rail.
Chapter 03
What vinyl does not forgive
The one real weakness of vinyl and composite fencing is cold. It gets brittle in a hard freeze, and a panel that would just flex under an impact in July can crack in January. It is worth knowing before a storm limb or a mower comes anywhere near a run in cold weather, since a cracked vinyl panel is a full panel replacement, not a spot repair the way a single wood board can be swapped.
